6 Steps to Follow if You Knock Out a Tooth

It’s entirely possible for anyone to experience a knocked out tooth at least once in their life! Whether through rigorous physical activities or a classic slip and fall, it always helps to know what to do in such a dental emergency. Here are the steps you need to follow:

Find the tooth

First and foremost, if you’re in a position to locate the tooth, do so. If you act quickly enough, it is entirely possible that the tooth can be reinserted.

Avoid handling by the root

In the case that you are able to locate the tooth, you’ll want to handle it ONLY by the crown. This is because the root has hundreds of microfibers that are needed undamaged in order to successfully reinsert the tooth.

Gently rinse the tooth

The next thing you need to do is get rid of any debris on your tooth. You want to AVOID scrubbing the tooth as you don’t want to damage those tiny fibers but rather, just gently rinse under running water.

Store carefully

Next, you need to think about how you’re going to store the tooth. You’ll need to keep it moist so you’ll have to store it in a container, fully submerged in either contact solution or tap water with a dash of salt in it.

Schedule your appointment

The above points need to happen within 1-2 hours of your emergency if you plan on reinserting the tooth successfully so schedule your appointment ASAP!
