What Happens When You Get Dentures?

Using dentures to restore your smile is a simple & straightforward tooth replacement option that many people opt for thanks to its affordability. The process for getting dentures can vary from individual to individual but, generally, it takes between 3-6 weeks before you can walk out with your new prosthetic teeth! Here’s the process you can expect, outlined in detail:

The consultation

In your initial consultation, our dental practitioner will conduct a thorough evaluation of your oral health and take impressions of your mouth in order to have your new dentures custom designed to your exact smile. If extraction of teeth is necessary in your next appointment and if you decide on immediate dentures, the arrangements for this will be made during the consultation. Your consultation will be all about making sure you have all the information you need about this treatment.

Secondary impressions

Provided you don’t get immediate dentures after extraction, secondary impressions will be taken during your next appointment with the use of custom-made trays and trial dentures (made out of wax) in order to get all the details precisely right, including the shape, colour and positioning of your teeth.

Healing period

Do you need to have your teeth extracted? If so, you’ll need to give your gum tissues time to heal before having your new dentures fitted in. This healing period can vary between individuals but on average, you can expect it to generally take 6-8 weeks. During this time, your mouth will be fitted with temporary dentures to prevent deterioration of the jawbone.

Fitting in your new dentures!

In your final appointment, you’ll have your new teeth fitted in! Give yourself time to adapt, your facial muscles might be sore and you’ll find it strange to talk and chew over the first few weeks. Follow up appointments and minor adjustments might also prove necessary to ensure you have perfectly fitted dentures.
