Crowns vs. Dental Veneers: What You Need to Know

The team at Studfield Dental Group in Wantrina South understands that going to the dentist can be quite frustrating for some people.  Especially when you don’t understand the terminology used to describe your treatment.

A couple of common procedures performed in dentistry are crowns and veneers.  You may have heard these terms used interchangeably.  While there are some similarities, they also have their differences.

What Caps and Veneers Have in Common

Both veneers and crowns are fabricated covers that fit over your tooth. A custom shading job by the lab technician allows them to be any colour necessary.  They are made from the same, or similar material, which is very durable and meant to last many years. A very strong cement is used to affix either to the natural tooth.  Natural tooth preparation is needed, meaning your dentist will have to reduce the thickness of your natural tooth in order to make proper room for the restoration.

What’s the Difference Between Crowns and Veneers?

People who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth may get veneers. These are done mostly on front teeth, resulting in a straighter, whiter smile.  A veneer covers the front of a tooth and slightly overlaps the back, to help with retention. It is strictly a cosmetic procedure.

Just like a veneer, a crown improves the look of a tooth, but it also serves another purpose.  A crown protects the natural tooth underneath.  It wraps around the entire surface of the tooth for full coverage and optimal retention.  Therefore, more natural tooth reduction is necessary when preparing for a crown versus a veneer.  Your dentist may decide that a crown is a better option if the tooth in question is too short. Or if the tooth is weak due to breakage, decay or endodontic treatment such as a root canal.
