How Long Does a Root Canal Take & What to Expect

If you’re expecting a single visit to your dentist for a root canal treatment, in most cases it’s not a procedure to be done in one go. However, it’s essential and must be done in the unfortunate case of a bacterial infection to the pulp of the tooth, known as Pulpitis. If left untreated, an infection can not only lead to tooth loss but may spread around the mouth.

While they often get a bit of a bad rap, root canals are lifesavers (or, more accurately, tooth-savers), allowing you to keep your natural teeth intact and pain-free. Avoiding an extraction is important for many, as it is also a financial relief when tooth replacement isn’t necessary.

SDG Dental has practised root canal procedures for decades with precision and utmost care by utilising modern dentistry and technology.

In this guide, we’ll break down how long a root canal typically takes, what to expect from the procedure and why there’s nothing to fear.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

A root canal procedure can vary in duration and may require multiple appointments depending on the tooth and the extent of infection.

Generally, each appointment takes about 60 to 90 minutes but the full treatment may span a few weeks if more than one visit is necessary. Here’s a closer look at what influences the timeline:

  • Type of Tooth: Front teeth often have a single root canal and can be treated relatively quickly, sometimes in a single visit. Molars have multiple canals that usually require more time and, occasionally, more than one appointment.
  • Extent of Infection: If the tooth is severely infected, the dentist may need to place medication inside the tooth to help clear the infection before the final sealing. In such cases, they may recommend returning after one to two weeks.
  • Complexity and Equipment: Complex cases with curved or hidden canals can take longer, especially if treated by a general dentist rather than an endodontist, who specialises in root canals.

In some straightforward cases, the entire procedure can be completed in one visit. For more advanced cases, expect to come back for two or three appointments over several weeks. Our team at SDG Dental are very informative of the time and process that it takes to complete treatment. The transparency will allow you to understand what’s in store for you before the treatment begins.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

Multiple appointments for a root canal are sometimes essential to ensure thorough treatment and complete healing. Here’s a rundown on the treatment process at SDG Dental in Wantirna.

On your first visit, our dentist will start by numbing the area, then isolating the tooth with a rubber dam to keep it dry. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp inside, carefully removing it to prevent the infection from spreading. If the tooth was causing discomfort, this step can provide significant relief. Once the pulp is removed, an antibiotic solution is placed in the canal to target any remaining bacteria, and the tooth is sealed temporarily.

At the next appointment, our dentist will reopen the tooth and focus on cleaning and shaping the canals. This stage involves using fine tools to scrub the inside of each canal, ensuring that the canals are shaped just right for the filling. The time between appointments helps ensure that the infection is completely gone before the final steps.

Depending on the tooth and how it’s responding, it may be ready to be filled at this point or another session will be required to be sure everything is infection-free. Once the tooth is ready, our dentist will fill the canals, sealing them off to prevent bacteria from getting back inside.

For full protection and strength, a crown or permanent filling will be placed at a final appointment. This last step not only restores the tooth’s function but keeps it durable for everyday use.

What to Expect After the Procedure

After each step in the root canal treatment, a bit of soreness or tenderness is common, particularly if the infection is severe. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Recovery Between Appointments

  • Mild discomfort around the tooth is normal for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help but it’s always recommended to speak to your dentist about the right aftercare.
  • Avoid chewing with the treated tooth until the procedure is fully complete to avoid reinfection or further damage.

   Long-Term Care

  • Once the permanent filling or crown is in place, your root canal-treated tooth can last for many years, even a lifetime, if well cared for. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are key to maintaining the health of the restored tooth.

At SDG Dental, our dental practitioners clearly communicate on aftercare, costs and other relevant information regarding the procedure prior to treatment. Our friendly staff too will assist in any questions you may have on the procedure to keep you better informed.

While a root canal treatment might take a few visits, it’s a highly effective way to relieve pain and eliminate infection. With a bit of patience and following your dentist’s instructions, you’ll be back to normal with a strong, pain-free tooth in no time!
