How to Take Care of Your Child’s Smile

While getting your child used to a regular checkup with the dentist is important, you’ll obviously want to avoid any serious trips to the dentist or dental complications when your child is just a few years old. Such complications are often entirely avoidable so your child doesn’t have to endure any anxiety and intensive dental work if you follow the right steps to taking care of their oral health! Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

Floss daily

Cavities are most prone to forming between teeth- this is why flossing daily is so important. Some children have plenty of gaps between their baby teeth, making it quite easy to floss. However, even if your child has teeth that touch, you’ll want to pay special attention to these spots when flossing. These crowded spots are more likely to decay than others.

Help brush

Your child might love to brush their teeth on their own but when it comes to matters of oral health you simply have to follow up and make sure a thorough job is done. Allow your child to brush on their own but make it a point to diligently follow up as they go along and brush along their gumlines as well!

Choosing toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste is known for being a strong toothpaste, capable of strengthening teeth and making them more resistant to decay. However, you should be careful with how much toothpaste you use: for toddlers, make sure to use a small, rice-sized smear. Once your child is able to brush on his/her own, you can increase the amount to a pea-sized dab.

Keep hydrated

Get your child used to drinking more water during the day. By sipping on milk and sugary drinks this encourages the accumulation of bacteria inside the mouth that increases the risk of tooth decay.
