What is General Dentistry?
General dentistry refers to basic dental procedures that include oral exams, cleanings, dental imaging, removal of plaque, extractions and minor fillings. These dentists are often the first point of contact for many patients seeking dental care. Being primary care dental providers, they are equipped to handle most dental problems and can guide you in maintaining a healthy mouth. With less recovery time in comparison to major dental procedures, genera dental treatments are usually done within a few hours. Keep reading for some of the dental solutions we offer here at SDG Dental.
What are Regular Dental Checkups?
Dental examinations are an important process that should be performed every 6 months as it’s a great way to keep your oral health in check. When you come in for a check-up, our dentists will perform a thorough assessment of your mouth and treat any problems before they have a chance of worsening. These check-ups also involve oral cancer screening and professional dental cleaning. If you wish to get any cosmetic dental procedures done, we will examine your teeth and surrounding tissue during these appointments to better understand how your smile can be improved to suit your needs. We offer various solutions, which you can opt for individually or as a package to give yourself a complete smile makeover!
Some of our personalised treatments like teeth whitening or dental crowns may be just what you need to get a bright, new smile. When you come in for your appointment, we’ll perform a thorough evaluation and discuss what would be ideal to improve your smile. Together, we’ll create a personalised plan to achieve the best results for you.
What are the Benefits of General Dentistry?
Routine visits to the general dentist are crucial in maintaining the health, cleanliness, and aesthetic appeal of your teeth. General dentists recommend regular check-ups and cleanings every four to six months, along with additional visits as needed for cosmetic or restorative procedures. These appointments enable the early detection and treatment of dental issues, helping to prevent more serious problems in the future. Additionally, general dentists play a crucial role in educating patients about proper oral hygiene practices and lifestyle choices that can impact their oral health.
Here are some of the key benefits of General Dentistry:
- Prevents Cavities: Plaque and tartar build-up, if not addressed, often leads to cavities. Our general dentists aim to remove such build-up on teeth and along the gum line through routine cleanings, lowering the risk of cavities and related concerns.
- Prevents Bad Breath: Regular visits to the dentist offer the advantage of fresh breath. Despite the misconception that check-ups don’t impact daily life, neglecting them can lead to halitosis. This condition arises from plaque and tartar build-up on teeth, and a dental cleaning effectively removes the foul-smelling bacteria, enhancing breath quality.
- An Improved Smile: Regular dental checkups can enhance your smile by removing plaque and tartar and preventing staining from natural discolouration or enamel wear. Prioritizing these examinations can contribute to long-term oral health and aesthetic improvement.
- Maintains Good Oral Health: General dentistry allows for timely intervention, preventing dental problems from worsening. This helps save time and money spent on complex dental procedures in the future.
- Cost Effective: General dentistry is also financially beneficial to you as addressing dental issues in their early stages is typically less costly than having to treat advanced problems which can be expensive. These prevention consultations will be an investment for your long-term oral health.
Regular check-ups and cleanings help prevent dental issues before they become serious. Our dentists at SDG Dental will also educate you on proper brushing and flossing techniques, diet choices, and other habits to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Scale and Clean
Scale and clean refers to the process of removing existing plaque and tartar that has developed on teeth over time. Although you may regularly practise good hygiene techniques at home, there are areas you can’t access with your toothbrush. These hidden spots can harbour plaque and bacteria, potentially leading to dental issues over time. It is a simple and non-invasive treatment that contributes to the overall well-being of your teeth and gums. Professional cleaning can also remove surface stains, and get rid of bad breath, leaving your teeth looking brighter and whiter.
EXTRACTIONS
Sometimes, a tooth must be removed due to severe decay, damage, crowding or trauma. Tooth extractions are a common procedure in general dentistry. They can be simple or surgical. A simple extraction involves loosening the tooth and removing it with forceps. Surgical extractions, often needed for impacted teeth, involve making an incision in the gum to access the tooth. Our dentists are well-equipped to handle cases of extractions and will send you home feeling relieved and educated on the handling of extraction aftercare.
Restorations / Fillings
Fillings are used to restore function to teeth affected by decay, wear or trauma. These treatments aim to preserve the tooth’s structure and functionality while preventing further deterioration and tooth loss.
During restorations, our dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and surrounding bacteria, before cleaning and filling it with durable materials such as composite resin or amalgam. This process restores the tooth’s shape, function and strength while preventing further decay or damage.
Fissure Sealants
Fissure sealants are a preventative measure generally performed on children or teenagers. The seal is placed on the biting surfaces of your back teeth, which generally attract tooth decay and are difficult to clean with your toothbrush. The treatment is quick, painless and non-invasive. Fissure sealants create a smooth and protective barrier over the grooves, preventing food and bacteria from getting trapped and reducing the risk of cavities.
Affordable Dental Implants
Our affordable Dental Implants are a reliable and permanent solution used to replace missing or damaged teeth that cannot be saved by conventional means. Dental implants can be used with other solutions, like implant-supported dentures or all-on-4 implants, to make the result more durable and comfortable. You can choose to have the dental implant procedure in the dental chair under local anaesthesia or by using our in-house General Anaesthesia facilities to make this a painless process.

Endodontic / Root Canal Treatment
Dental pulp is the soft tissue that comprises blood vessels, tissue fibres and nerve fibres. These are confined in channel/s that run through the crown and roots of a tooth. The most common cause of pulp damage is deep tooth decay, which inevitably leads to bacteria invading the pulp.
The pulp may then become inflamed or infected, and it may not only spread through the tooth pulp but can also affect the surrounding bone. An abscess may result from this, leading to swelling and discomfort. Not all abscessed teeth become symptomatic; many are diagnosed at clinical and radiographic examinations.
Other causes of pulp damage include trauma, leaking fillings, extensively worn and cracked teeth, and periodontal (gum) disease. To treat this severe form of infection, we employ endodontic dentistry (otherwise known as root canal therapy) to save your tooth. If the damage is too advanced for a root canal, then tooth extraction is the last remaining solution. Root canal therapy is a safe way of saving and restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.
At SDG Dental, our dentists employ the latest technology to help make your root canal treatment and experience as comfortable as possible.
HOW MUCH DOES GENERAL DENTISTRY COST?
The cost of general dental treatments can vary depending on several factors, including the specific type of treatment needed, your individual circumstances and the severity of your dental issues. Our dentists will provide an accurate cost estimate during your initial consultation following a comprehensive assessment of your mouth. Our goal is to ensure that you fully understand the financial aspects of your treatment plan before proceeding.
